The Pablo Casals Festival

Around the year 1000, Corneilla de Conflent was capital of  Conflent and Cerdagne Counties . 


The village and its church step into history along with Count Guillaume Jorda (1097), a  descendant of Count Guifred. He decided to establish in Corneilla a community of regular canons, according to the Rule of Saint Augustine. Thus, the parish church,  Sainte-Marie de Corneilla, became an augustine priory. Renovated, enlarged and completed by new buildings : it is now a pure catalan jewel of roman art. It holds many treasures accumulated trough centuries : roman virgins, gothic altarpieces of outstanding beauty.

Since 1863, Georges-Daniel de Monfreid lived in Corneilla de Conflent, in St Clement family mansion. There, he met many prominent artists, particularly Paul Gauguin, a close friend of his.
