Marquixanes

MARQUIXAN

Marquixanes

Picturesque village of around 400 people, located in the Têt valley, at the foothill of mount Canigou , Marquixanes is listed in the Historical Monuments Inventory. Named for the first time in a text of the early XIth  century, it was the estate of  the prior of Saint-Martin du Canigou, who remained its landlord until the French Revolution. In 1172 he was authorized by the king of Aragon to build a fortified enclosure, remodelled in the XIVth century and still well preserved. You can namely admire two mediaeval portals : “ la Porte du Fort” and “ la Porte de l’Eglise”.

Sainte Eulalie church is richly decorated and displays furniture of the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries. You will notice the altarpiece of the main altar, a work of Master Francesc Negra, of impressive size, overflowing with baroque angels and cherubs, paintings proceeding from the workshop of Sunyer and Maestro of Espira. Altogether, it constitute a remarkable stopover in your quest for baroque altarpieces.
Recently, the population of the village is increasing, a positive sign of dynamism.
