Ille sur Têt

Ille sur têt

Half-way between the Mediterranean beaches and the ski resorts of Pyénées-Orientales, this city of 5 300 inhabitants offers a fascinating historical patrimony. Ille is an important burg since the Middle Ages and vestiges of its urban structure are still visible in the remaining ramparts. Large houses subsist and particularly the “House of the Count” that was used by Prosper MERIMEE as a setting for his novel “ La Vénus d’Ille”

« Saint Jacques hospice » is one of the rare hospitals still preserved, in the South of France. Originally it attended pilgrims on their way to Compostella. To day, it is a centre of resources and enhancement of the Catalan patrimony.

Saint-Etienne church looks like a cathedral and displays a very rich baroque furniture and masterpieces
