Mont-Louis

Mont-Louis

When leaving Prades, on N116 motorway, heading for Andorra and Spain , you climb the Pyrenean mountain and enjoy fabulous sceneries until reaching Mont-Louis, circled by 5 miles of ramparts unchanged since Vauban’s time.

In 1659, after signing the Treaty of Pyrenees and in order to secure the new boundary with Spain , the place of Mont-Louis (named after Louis XIV) was created, following Vauban’s plans . Originally it was designed as a military establishment and mostly built by soldiers.

Since 40 years, the fortress is occupied by le Centre National d'Entrainement Commando  (Commando unit national training centre)

Right by the side of the fortress entrance is a monument with a bust of General Gilles, a legendary character among paratroopers. Born in 1904, he went trough the French Army Academy (Saint Cyr), served in Morocco during the Rif war, fought for the liberation of France in 1944, then served in Indochina and Algeria .
