The Pablo Casals Festival

Paul Baumgartner was born in 1903 at Altstutten in Switzerland. In 1909, his father was Cathedral organist at St Gall, chief town of the canton. Paul studied music as a pupil of Walter Braunfels in Munich,  and of E. Erdmann at Cologne, where he taught at the Conservatoire from 1927 to 1935. From 1937 onwards, he has been the chief pianoforte teacher at the Basel conservatoire.
He made concert tours in most European countries as a soloist, and especially with the great cellist Feuermann.
From 1941 ownwards, Baumgartner was Pablo Casal's partner in most of his recitals in Switzerland.
